Out of the depths by Chief Rabbi Lau. Rabbi Lau's brother also wrote a book, Bilaam's Curse. It's on my to read list.
I've read almost all the abridged versions of the holocaust diaries published by CIS. I wish I could find the full versions. They Called Me Frau Anna and Alone in the Forest are standout books in the series.

Gertuda's Oath
In My Hands
Both of those books are written by non-Jewish women who saved Jews in the holocaust. They are must reads!!

Has anyone mentioned NIGHT by Elie Weisel? Often required reading in schools and one of the earlier first person accounts of survival during the Holocaust.

'And morning has come' the sequel to 'the scent of snowflowers' is a really unique perspective of the post-war struggles

Is "Tell the World" a first person account? Or a collection of first person accounts?

If you want books that were written by non-religious first hand. One is The Endless Steppe about Siberia and The Upstairs Room about a girl hidden in an attic.

One person account, written in third person by an author. Excellently written.

A Boy Named 68818 (Israel Starck with Miriam Miller)
Since my Dh is related to the author, I am posting anonymously.
It's a great book even though I am biased

(I recently read “Eye to Eye” which is not historically notable in and of itself, but the author knew my grandfather and mentions him by name, which is why I even know about the book… that got me started and then I read “Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account,” which is a lot. I’ve ordered “Five Chimneys” and “Thanks to my Mother.” Other than that I have nothing on my reading list. A first person account doesn’t need to be the account of a survivor… for example if someone wrote a personal account, hid it, then that person was murdered, but their account was later uncovered and published, that would be relevant too. But I feel I need to read the voices of the people directly effected, so no general histories please.)
Edit: Not looking for fiction. Non-fictional "real-life" testimonies please. |
Alone In The Forest (I think this book was recently re-published with a different title - I believe something about a cat)
To Vanquish The Dragon

So it's a documentary not a book - but really excellent - nowadays on Amazon Prime I think.
"I am here" - about an amazing centenarian (KYH) called Ella Blumenthal.

I've read almost all of them and each one is different and unique. Some of these people survived by hiding or by fighting as partisans. If you want one that gives you a more thorough account and details of Auschwitz I would suggest To Vanquish the Dragon (Pearl Benisch)

I was really impressed by the book twice buried still alive.
I couldn't get over how this man (Yitzchok Donath o"h) remained so positive during his horrific experiences.
The book was written by his grand daughter and proof read by him, he would only agree to have a book written about himself if it wasn't embellished, just true facts and stories.
