Do you like the name Shifra for a baby girl?

I’ve been debating making this same post!! 😄 DH and I have the absolute worst time agreeing on names, and he’s adamant about an “old” Torah-based name whereas I want a more modern/unique sounding name. We have sort of come to a compromise on Shifra because it isn’t super common, at least where we live, and is still a wonderful person to name after from the Torah. I voted love it

Just heard from someone with this name that she was given it because in what's called gematria אותיות קטנות , it equals chai -18.

I love it - but not just for a baby girl also for a big girl LOL

Really has a special meaning. I know a couple of Shiras who changed their names to Shifra as per advice from Gedolim.

I like the name but don’t absolutely love it. If this were a family name, would have no problem using it.

I have a shifra. We call her Shiffy. There are plenty of Shifra's in our family. They're all called Shiffy.

It’s more common than it used to be. A beautiful name with a beautiful meaning and history. And many wonderful girls (and women!) with the name.

I love the name Shifra for a baby girl, though I totally admit to being biased by my beautiful, wonderful niece Shifra. I think when you associate a name positively with people in your life, you like it.

ETA to be honest, I don't like Shiffy that much. I think Shifra is beautiful. I tend to like classic rather than cutesy - like Chava as opposed to Chavy....

As opposed to for a boy? I know a few Shifras and I think of a name when it comes to the people I know.

Shifra/shiffy is a family name in my cousin’s family as well.
I think it’s a beautiful name, and a beautiful meaning.

I think Shifra is a beautiful name. Think of who she was - Yocheved, wife of Amram, Mother of Moshe Rabbeinu, was given that name because of how she treated the newborn babies - and she saved so many of their lives!

I don't love Shiffy. No need to change the real name.

I was just thinking… I don’t know any shifra who isn’t a nice person! The few Shifras I know are all nice!

It's a nice name. The nickname "Shiffy" isn't bad, but it has the potential of being nickname²d "Fishy."

Very yeshivish traditional family. Dh and I chose to give DD the name Shifra after a close relative instead of a certain similar Yiddish name that is not so accepted.

(We have given Yiddish names after relatives but only names that are semi-common and accepted in our community. I really do not appreciate my own uncommon Yiddish name. I know that one grandparent didn't appreciate our switch but I don't regret it for a second. Our rav told us the name is OUR choice and you don't choose a name that will embarrass the child!)

Dh and I - and DD! - love the name Shifra and its meaning.

Since then another SIL also chose to use the name Shifra instead of the Yiddish name.

My daughter is shifra.
It's beautiful, literally Wink

And it's torahdik and yeshivish and not strange but its also uncommon.
Like there are no other shifras in my daughter's school department of 300 girls.
