I'm currently living in Israel. I will be here for a few (2) more years but for personal reasons we need to decide now (as much as possible, I realize things can change) where we will move to when we go back.
Here is what we are looking for:
not ny (its too expensive)
we are very frum (chareidi/yeshivish)
good kollel (serious), kiruv kollel ok as well.
solid community and community structure. we don't mind if its a mix of diff types (it doesn't have to be like lakewood, all yeshivish) as long as there is a strong yeshivish presence.
good chinuch for the kids.
Any ideas?

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania was awesome when we lived there and it's got a kollel, a big Lubab community and a lot of happy people. It's close enough to civilization (ie NY) to drive 6-7 hours but far enough so that there is no NY feel to the place.

Pittsburgh is the best!
Small, warm, united Jewish community but large enough to haven a 3 place to go out and eat. etc.
Low cost of living.
Ppl. are not megusham.
Nice Kollel.
Schools- you have 2 options a very accomadating Lubavitcher school or a MO school that has many Yeshivish teachers and students.
If you don't like to mix this probably isn't the place for you;)

op here.
thanks for the replies.
we don't mind a mix but want to avoid co-ed schooling (for older grades) and don't want a predominantly lubavitch community (or very large chabad presence.).

Thinking outside the box: Dallas?
You most likely are going to have to compromise on something.

I second Passaic or Baltimore. Where is your family in the States? Do you want to be nearby or far away?

my family is in ny and chicago. I'd rather be closer to rather then further from chicago.

Do these communities have strong kollels?
How is the cost of living (or how much would you need to live there)?

toledo has a brand new yeshiva & lots of new young couples from the midwest area.
cleveland has telz
detroit has a mirrer yeshiva & a lakewood kollel
I think the others have kollelim. the midwest is generally the cheapest area to live in- with the possible exception of chicago. houses in my area are 150,000-250,000 most of these places have nice schools or more than one. um sorry except toledo- the kids there go to school in detroit. pm me if you want more info.

actually I beg to differ. Pittsburgh would defnitly go under the catergory of "not a predominantly lubavitch community" eventhough the lubavitch school is the biggest, there are still a few different types of groups here. she could definitly find her place!

shayna, I know who the op is, and I know her very well, and I know pittsburgh very well, and I'm just saying its not for her.
ps. pittsburgh has a big drug problem among its teens. thats why rabbi/dr twerski started a frum drug rehab hospital there.
