Anyone ever heard of this name ? And where does it come from ?? My friend just gave birth and named her daughter rikkel , they are calling her rikki. However , her mother's name , may she be alive and well, is rivky! I always thought rikki was nickname for rivky! In any case I find it so strange that she would choose that name when it's so similar to her mothers name .

I have a niece rikkel and my sister in law name is Rivky also. In her family some of her siblings have a Rivky and rikkel. That I think is even stranger. Apparently it’s two different names.

There are two different names. Rivka (Hebrew) and Rikkel (Yiddish). Both can be nicknamed Rikki.

Just like Eli can be for Eliyohu, Eliezer, Elimelech
Shevy can be for Elisheva, Batsheva
Tzippy can be for Tziporah or Tzipa
Etti can be for Esther, Ettel, Etta, Etya

Rikki can be for Rivka or Rikkel

Rivka just happens to be more common

Is Rikkel a yiddish version of Rivky? It sounds like it is.

But I have heard that a yiddish version of a name is a different name, so you could have a Rikkel and a Rivky in the same family.

The question is whether Rikkel is a corruption of Rivka or Rachel.

Family name for us. My mother personally didn't use it because it's similar to Rivka but a sibling did.

Many Yiddish names are "corruptions" of Hebrew/Biblical names, but became their own name, often with different spelling patterns.

Do I think it's a beautiful name as is? No. But the family member who had that name was very special and it has a very normal nickname Rikki, so I would have no problem giving the name.

We had a very far grandmother with this name . My father always wanted someone to use this name but none of us liked it. Finally couple of years ago one niece got the name and she's the cutest Riki ever!
