I just paid $4.55 for gas, at a full service station in the 5 Towns. The gas station right next door is $4.75. How is the average working-middle class family supposed to be able to afford this???? It will for sure be over $5 before the summer

I didn’t vote for the current president, or for my current mayor, or for my current governor…..
Also, that doesn’t really help me now, or answer my question. I purposely DIDNT put this in the politics section, but rather in finances. Given the current prices, how are middle cleans working families supposed to afford living? Most people aren’t getting raises to accommodate the rise in cost of living….

I didn’t mean to make it political, but It’s literally the only thing we can do. And Daven of course. There is nothing to do about it otherwise.

That’s nothing. It’s been $6 here in California for months now. Nobody seems to care. Each time I fill up it’s $100.

We've been thinking twice using the car. Getting more deliveries etc.
We've never used to cheshbon like this but now we definitely factor in cost of driving to a store vs a more local option etc

I don’t have a choice. I have kids in school who don’t get a bus. I have to take my kids to appointments. I have to go shopping. (Some I do through an app, but some I can’t)
I’m thinking twice about going away this summer, because we would have to drive to get there. The cost of everything is going up, but our salaries are staying the same….

Are any of these an option?

Public transportation / walking
Working remotely, even part of the time
Online ordering / grocery deliveries
School bussing (if you were driving)
For appts, seeing if they can do it remotely
For work driving, see if you can join a coworker and split the gas costs or alternate days who drives

Basically, if there is a way to cut down on driving.

If you're really strapped, get a MetroCard and use the bus and train more often. You can use it to go to the supermarket and get it delivered or errands without the kids. Should help. And limit your car to pick up and dropping off to school.

I am driving a lot less. Tried using amazon fresh today for some groceries. Maybe will do it regularly. Trying to condense as many errands as I can into a day. Generally trying to be more mindful of how much I drive and can I do what I need to without driving a lot.

Exactly this. For some reason, nobody seems to care! How come? Where are all the riots and the crazy media?? If this was happening under Trump, we wouldn’t hear the end of this. But for some reason, no one‘s doing anything about the gas prices, inflation, the fact that we don’t even get unemployment anymore and the prices being absurd… The world is really upside down

I wish I knew. Just paid credit cards for pesach, are walking as much as possible and not shopping much, cutting corners everywhere. But with inflation - and the price of gas - I can't afford the tuition payment this month Sad and I'm heartbroken and ashamed.

I’m not necessarily talking about me specifically, but rather the general population, but I will respond to each anyway.
It depends what you consider walking distance, most things are not walking distance from my house.
I work from home, my husband can’t work remotely.
I order groceries and other things online as much as I can, and I don’t really shop (aside from groceries) in my area, it’s too expensive. However, there are some things that I need to do in the store. I tried getting vegetables from where I order, but they never send good stuff, so I’ve been going to pick my own from the store. I stop on my way home from carpool (it’s actually literally right along the way) so I don’t go out of my way.
My kids don’t get bussing because we live in NYC and they go to school in Nassau county. NYC doesn’t bus out.
Some appointments can be (and are) done remotely, but some things- like well visits, dental visits, etc.- can’t be done remotely.

I know it won’t make you feel better but in UK we’re paying equivalent to $9.3 a gallon (£1.67 per litre)

Costs over $130 to fill up full tank

Biden’s weakness effected everyone in the west but I don’t wanna get political

You are not meant to be able to afford anything, you are meant to stand on the food/bread lines and be homeless/live in public housing and take public transportation. Welcome to Socialism/Communism.

I'm in Israel but am hearing tons of reports about gas prices in the US. Are people really not talking about it?

And I thought it had to do with the war in Russia/Ukraine. No one in America voted for Putin.

Gas prices started skyrocketing the day after inauguration, although the media would like for you to believe it has everything to do with Russia.

This past month my credit card bill was higher than ever before. At first I thought it was because of pesach shopping and a lot of it was because of pesach. However when I looked through the bill I realized that my grocery shopping and filling up on gas is what’s making the bill over the top. Food is so expensive these days! I’m sure I’m not the only one who realizes it. Between food and gas prices we could really use another income.
It’s normal to be struggling now. We are living through severe inflation.
Btw- be happy you have a car! Old cars are worth the same thing they cost when they were new because of severe shortage and inflation.
My neighbor just told me that her 12 year old car with 90,000 miles costs the same as it did when she bought it second hand 10 years ago. Insane!!
We are living through hard times. It’s not only the gas.
