Prepare a backpack with activities games small toys snacks and treats. Also, large headphones so they can watch- I find that the ones they give out in the lane are hard to keep in elderly for little kids. I include a empty water bottle so that when they get drinks we put it into the bottle and we have no spills.

Color wonder coloring pages, water wow coloring books, mosaic puzzle sticker books (Melissa and Doug), mini travel games like chutes and ladders, fidget toys, and lots of snacks. Easy stuff like applesauce pouch, a small lolly, a chewy bar, mini pop m cookies...

I only fly at night with young kids. They get their meal, they watch a little and then they sleep.
I also take the melissa & Doug activity books, triangular crayons that can't roll off the tray, magnetic activity book from ali express, and snacks, but usually they sleep til an hour or 2 before landing so it's enough.

My mom always used to get us a brand new toy that would only be introduced once we got on the plane. I have vague memories of dressing up little dolls.

Sorry I disagree. Older kids can definitely watch for hours. Between eating and maybe having a shluf, they’ll be more than fine watching for a long flight. If they don’t get to at home it’ll be a huge treat. Little kids with no attention spans are much much harder
