If I promise I cannot say 'only if it's within x amount of time' or 'only if it's a boy next' etc.
if I promise a Shimon, I will have to give the name for my next boy whenever that may be and even though I needed IVF to get there and even if I have a girl first.. |
Why?
Wouldn't that make more sense? If it works within a year or so, great. If not, I'm not left with a promise for my whole life that I might forget when I have a first boy in 10 years.
Less chance of forgetting the promise, or not being able to fulfil it (Like, I don't know, getting remarried to someone named Shimon)

I'm repeating what I was told. You do not play around with Reb Shimon.
I heard a story from my friend, the granddaughter. When her grandmother was married for approximately 2 years she went to Miron with family And they were telling her to promise a name as a zechus to have a baby. Her grandmother was already pregnant but didn't want to share the secret just yet. So she agreed to promise a name thinking that it's 'just a show' since it's not relevant to her. She asked a Gadol afterwards if she needs to give the name Shimon, and he told her that she should. She went on to have many more children afterwards but the oldest is Shimon.

I know someone who named his first son after Reb Shimon - no if issues, he just felt close to the tzaddik. So it's not so uncommon that it'll announce your if.

She's not the only one. I know people go to daven in Meron. Never knew R' Shimon bar Yochai had any special connections to women with infertility getting pregnant.
