I know Eichlers sells them, but I hear there are cheaper places.

Also Coins are kept by baby's family, I think?

How much is given to Kohen?

It’s from the matnas kehuna. Buy them off the kohen to give back. The cash you pay for them becomes the useful money.

Maybe, but that’s not how it works. Pidyon haben is giving 5 silver coins to the kohen. I remember admiring my father’s set of silver coins. Later someone bought them off him to give to a different kohen.

We bought back one off the Kohen. DH had to beg tho.. He didn't want to sell it to us.

I'll ask dh where we bought it, if he remembers I'll come back here to post.

Ok it was a private person. I don't want to post up here tho.

Boro Park in low 40 and 10, maybe. If you want you can pm me.

Please don't beg the cohen for his silver coins. It is so not appropriate.

The cohanim in my family would never sell. Their coins are irreplaceable.

It was a long time ago, but I think DH got from a coin dealer in Brooklyn who's familiar with what's needed and sells them only for the value of the silver.

And one thing DH was told by a big Rav was no matter what, don't take the coins back from the Kohen even if he offers to give/sell, because some say it could be a halachic question of whether they were given over in a wholehearted and complete manner, if he knew he would be getting them back later. Not saying those who bought them back are wrong, but definitely ask your LOR if/how to do it before just assuming there's no issues involved.

The Kohen IS my Rav... he knew very well why we wanted them back. It was a major simcha to say the least.

Sorry OP, hope you saw my message. I am going back to anon.

My kohen bought my son a silver becher with the money from the coins. In some ways it would be nice to have those coins as a reminder. I wasnt given an option this is what this kohen did.

So interesting. My family members have antique silver dollars from the 1800's. People pay the "value" and then give them the silver coins back.

The Kohen gets the coins and keeps them. That is the norm.
