I used to defrost broccoli or diced onions and other frozen vegetables and just add it to salads, but the back of the packages say they must be cooked or microwaved because they have bacteria. I've been cooking them ever since I found out, but people don't know about this.

I think it's that they MAY have bacteria, not that they DO have bacteria.

The cake mix and flour also cautions you against tasting raw batter, and egg cartons warn you to cook them.

Bacteria are pretty ubiquitous. No one thought frozen vegetables were sterile. The companies put this in the packaging to cover themselves in case anything happens, but I don't know of anyone who was sick after eating uncooked frozen vegetables.

there must be a reason they put the warning on the package. Even when you search online it says to cook frozen vegetables.

Because they're not soft enough before cooking...

No. If fresh veg had labels it would say that too. Its printed out of legalese mumbo jumbo. Not a health warning.

No that's not the reason. It's for food safety. Many frozen vegetables would be edible if defrosted.

It could have salmonella or Listeria. It is a health warning.

Edible, but they don't taste as good.
But thanks for the PSA. I never knew that.

Lettuce also frequently has listeria warnings--so we wash it, not cook it.

You can't really cook lettuce. Frozen vegetables can be cooked. It's not a big risk, but it's still advised.

Frozen fruit has the same risk and you wouldnt cook it to solve that.

I'm with OP here.
Yes there's more of a risk with raw veggies, but sometimes it can't be avoided, like with lettuce. Washing probably helps but isn't going to go as far as cooking will. If it's easy enough to cook it, why not?

It's called CYA. From where they stand, if they don't put the warning, if a million people buy it and one gets sick, they might have a lawsuit.
