In the beginning I thought it was just some more empty Hollywood drama, and therefore didn't pay it much attention, but now I see people are really into it.
Can someone quickly summarize what the trial is about, and why it's become such major news?

The summary is that closing arguments are tomorrow, where each side will summarize their case. It’s worth watching if court drama interests you at all.
I’m watching it because I enjoy legal stuff but a lot of people are watching because it talks about abuse and how to figure out who’s being abused and who’s lying, stuff like that.
