If you are a SLP for the DOE, can you share your experience?
What area do you work in?
How does the salary work? How often are you paid?
Are you ever asked to be a substitute teacher (because of the TSSLD I heard this can happen)
What problems do you run into?
How many therapists are there?
How does YT and Shabbos work when candle lighting times are early?
How do you even apply?

I'm a young mom finishing up my CFY and I keep reading horror threads about working for agencies. I do EI now but I did most of my externship placements at yeshivas around the area.

I'm an ot for the doe. I can try to answer some questions. I'm not sure how speech therapists apply...check the website. You get paid twice per month. It's a salary that increases based on your educational level and experience. If you have 30+ masters you get paid more. Speech therapists are typically not asked to sub unless there is an emergency situation. In all my years in a few schools I haven't seen it happen. If you do have to cover a class I can't imagine it's a big deal. For shabbos and Yom tov you technically can leave in order to be home within 30 minutes of candlelighting. You may have to make up tje time if you leave early or get docked pay. Some principals let you take off chol hamoed some don't. It's difficult taking off erev Yom tov when you are taking off Yom tov. If your dh isn't flexible or you don't have steady help it will be a challenge if u have young kids. As a speech therapist you will definitely make decent money and there are sometimes opportunities to work extra and make more. Plus you can work summers. Plus you have benefits and are working toward a pension.

I am not in a "safe" area. Thankfully it's light outside when I leave work. As a new hire you can't really be so particular about where you are placed. You need to be more flexible and hope to switch schools down the line. Every neighborhood has its plusses and minuses. A more upperclass area can be more demanding in other ways.
