Timid and wavering.
Born to subserve.
Home in the kitchen.
Stand back and observe.

Behind the mechitza.
Beneath many layers.
Wrapped up in tichels.
Not counted in prayers.

That’s what they’ll have you believe, is it not?
Silent and lesser-than, that is our lot?

Somebody someplace got something quite wrong.
It seems they weren’t listening to Miriam’s song!

Let’s journey on back there a minute or two…
Look - Egypt! A birth crisis! What shall we do?

I’ll tell you what NOT to do… bet you can guess?
To whom shall we NOT delegate? I digress…

Except for not really, ‘cause we had the seichel
To listen to God and not worship an eigel!

We helped, once again, clean up everyone’s messes.
We gave up our gold and we each borrowed dresses.

We danced in the vineyards, upheld one another.
We’re BORN to be sisters. They LEARN to be brothers.

We cook and we nurture, house babies inside us.
We keep our homes strong so no one can divide us.

Our prayers can change history, pleasant or sour.
Don’t get in our way, ‘cause you don’t know our power!

A Great Pyrenees is well-mannered and calm.
It needn’t just bark at whatever goes on.
Shih tzus, chihuahuas, and miniature schnauzers
Will yap up the block because THEY’RE rabble rousers.

It’s not that one’s big and the other is small.
No, no. That’s short-sighted and not right at all.
It’s true that a small dog might over-assert.
(But if they were smart, they would go eat dessert.
Go quietly bulk up and THEN start a fight.
Let REAL “big dogs” show their glorious might!)

The big dogs aren’t better BECAUSE they are big.
And small ones aren’t worse. They’ve each got their own gig.
The problems ensue when one gets the idea
That THEIR kind’s the BEST kind this side of Pangea.
Both ought to be celebrated and held high.
Their photos both featured in Pets We Love Why.

Enough with this mashal, it’s late and I’m tired.
If I was my editor, I might get fired…

The point is each one of us glows like a star.
A force to be reckoned with - THAT’S who we are.

Some people discovered this fact recently.
They seemed not to know about you, her, or me.

They seemed to have maybe not learned, or forgotten
The many conundrums we fixed they got caught in.

No matter where exile takes us to roam,
The strength of our nation is nurtured AT HOME.

The women of Israel have special devotion.
Hashem knew it first, and it’s why we were chosen.

We say, “She’asani Kirtzono” each day
(That is, when our children allow us to pray).

(It’s not that we’re *better* - He MADE us this way,
So don’t go put words in my mouth I don’t say…)
But credit where credit is due… we are GREAT.
SO great, in fact, that ______ (yes, please fill in the blank!).

Legit, fill in the blank. And… GO.

__

This poem was inspired by the many ill-fated attempts of a powerful man to circumvent the need for my husband’s signature on a fraudulent business dealing. He tragically underestimated me as the easier target.

Last line?

"We're STRONG and we're AWESOME - so let's celebrate!"

(incredible poem btw - I'm still reeling from the "nerve" one! I'm so sorry you suffer so much in lfe, but my goodness, thank you for sharing the creativity that comes out of it - it's another level...)

Thanks! The last line is intended as complete with the near rhyme “…fill in the blank!” but your ways is cool too. 😊

Lol, thanks! Now I’m picturing each of us with our pic inside one of those peel-and-stick glow in the dark stars meant for decorating kids’ rooms.

Kiwi, forgive the editing. Leave out the "that" and try "we rejoice in our fate."

Wow! awesome!
You totally freaked me out with that beginning, I was about to skidadle and chalk it up as another feminist craziness but then I got to the good part.
I also really appreciated the rhythm and tanachik quotes
Thank you for sharing Smile
