I’m wondering how many people still do this.

I always check my eggs, though I’ve never found anything. Never heard of boiling.

I do, DH says it is not necessary now a days, but we still do it as it's a mesora for many years

I check eggs and boil odd number with at least 3. I have found blood spots, though not in a while. I do recall getting a lot of blood spots in brown eggs, when I tried those…I believe the reason for checking is more mesorah based these days, given the different process.

I’ve found blood spots only in organic eggs or eggs in other countries. I believe the eggs we use never get fertilized. I still do a rudimentary glance but I crack them right into the batter.

I don't check at night. I always wondered, is this a common minhag?

No. Maybe it stemmed from not having adequate light and therefore they couldn’t see well enough at night? It’s one of those things that was time period dependent and not supposed to be passed on for generations.

I check my eggs for blood but never heard of boiling an odd number of eggs. Where does that stem from and what's the rationale?

Yes of course. Occasionally I find blood spots--not often, but sometimes--and once or twice I found a bloody mess that reminded me of our HS biology lab on the development of the chick embryo.
and no, I don't buy free-range eggs, just garden-variety commercially-grown eggs from hens that theoretically never get anywhere near a rooster. mistakes happen.

I believe the source is as follows:
If you boil one egg and it’s a blood spot, your pot is trief. Two eggs and one has blood, not enough to batel it. Three eggs and one is bloody, the majority are not, so you’re good.
