Gap pants have been the best for us and you can often get 40% off.

I buy from children's place. They're cheap and fit well for us, and somehow my son doesn't get holes.

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE
The Children's Place
Boys Uniform Stretch Skinny Chino Pants - Black
buy this for my 8 year old. It's $14 a pair. Doesn't fade in the wash and doesn't get holes so fast. It's not tight fit but not super loose. I really like it.
Only downside is that it has a pretty hard button that he isn't so good at opening and closing alone.

I just got on old navy. The uniform built in flex skinny pants.
I used to get from h & m but I find that they're always out of stock these days
I have also gotten from gap but they're more expensive
I don't like shopping children's place because you need to return in the store and not by mail

I'm happiest with cat and Jack from target. All c&j clothing has a 1 year warranty, so if they get holes target will refund you/replace the pants.
Gap is more expensive
Ime old navy knees weren't reinforced
Children's place ripped incredibly quickly and so wasn't worth their cheap price
French toast- at least the ones I got - were very wide pants legs and didn't look as put together
Never tried h&m because the sizes are different and they don't have free returns.
But anyway, we're very happy with cat and Jack.

Don' you have to pay for shipping when you return by mail? My policy is I only order online if I can return by mail for free.

Yeah but they do free shipping so I count the return as payment for shipping.

Ditto. I bought lots of different brands of pants last year, and the only ones I can re-use this year for school are French Toast. They have enough "structure" to look good and my son (age 5) can manage the waist clasp on his own.

Just looked up cat and jack, seems they're mostly sold put in black/blue/dark grey in sizes 7 and 8. Will they get more in stock or that's it for the season?

I usually buy cat & jack, old navy and H&M. Each kid needs a different style and fit, so you might wned to try a few styles. I found that black denim holds up better than uniform pants, but not everyone likes that look.
Even with the same child, the same pants hold up differently every season. The way they sit, the sports they play, tightness of the pants...are all factors in the way they hold up.
