I'm not pregnant (I"H soon, and maybe say a little prayer for me) but my favorite past time is thinking of baby names. Except I go back and forth between these two names.
Pros of Yitzhak Yehoshua
- both names are relatives, Yitzhak being a crossover for DH and I
- I love the nicknames associated with both
- Both names are common enough that no one would ever make fun of him.
Cons of Yitzhak Yehoshua
- I feel like it's a little difficult for me to say the name in full. Even though we'd probably call him Izzy or Shua most of the time, I'd like to honor both names and I'm not sure if these two names flow together well.
- I feel like this name is less distinct than the other name.
Pros of Yitzhak Yair
- I love the way it sounds.
- I love the meaning
- I like that Yair is somewhat unique but still within the mainstream. I like that my kid might be the only Yair in his class but that there might be another Yair in the school, if you get my meaning.
Cons
- DH worries that people will laugh at him because of the connection with the Artscroll.
- Maybe Yair is still too unique? Too out there for a Litvish kid?
Either way, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What is the connection to Artscroll?
Love the name Yair! Not litvish so can’t weigh in on if it’s considered too out there.

The Hebrew-only Artscroll siddur is called Siddur Yitzhak Yair.

I think that's pretty obscure. I wouldn't worry about that.

since you're litvish, put in a c for yitzchak.
My thoughts:
1) Yitzchak Yehoshua is too many syllables.
2) With either name you may have him ending up as YY.

I like YY Jacobson so that's not too bad
But am I missing something? Is there a thing about being YY?

I like Yitzchak Yair better. It's a gorgeous name, and if he's not comfortable with "out there," he can just go by Yitzchak.

There was a fairly well known Rav in England called Rabbi Yehudah Yona Rubenstein, normally known as Rabbi YY. On one occasion he was interviewed in one of the big newspapers, and referred to throughout as (Rabbi) YY. The next week someone wrote into the paper and asked 'does he have a first name like the rest of us, or is he just two/too wise?'

Like the story. He is still a fairly well known Rabbi, he just doesn't live in England anymore. He moved to America.

Are you sephardi? You mentioned litvish, I'm just wondering why you're spelling it Yitzhak. Background can make a difference in accepted names...

I said a tefilah for you.
Definitely Yitzchak Yehoshua in my circles. Beautiful name(s).
For you, OP;
1. From your spelling of Yitzchak with no ‘ch’ but just an ‘h’,
2. Your use of ‘Izzy’ as a preferred nickname for Yitzchak as opposed to ‘Yitzy’,
3. And your choice of ‘Yair’ in general,
Makes me realize you are not from the ‘stereotypical’ yeshivish circles.
In that case, either would work equally well for you.
(Btw, love the name Yair and yes, some yeshivish might use it but for this thread, I am talking majority and stereotype here)
We are waiting to hear BE”H b’karov!

Neither Husband and I are Sephardi, but we are BT Litvish (I swear I know how to spell Yitzchak in Heberw! ). It's funny though, both of us have very Sephardi names ourselves despite being Yekkish of all things. So we're trying to fit into the Litvish crowd (because culturally, that's what we are) but we still both love the name Yitzchak Yair.

I really appreciate the teffilot!
You're right We're BT and we strive both to fit it as much as possible while also honoring the things that made us crazy enough to bring us onto this derech in the first place.
I guess I always assumed that there were different spellings of names like "Yitzchak" just because nobody really cares how it's spelled in English as long as the Hebrew is spelled correctly. Oops!
And yeah. My husband likes "Yitz" but I much prefer "Izzy" or even "Itzik". That's another in the "pros" section of Yitzchak Yehoshua: We both agree on "Shua".
