Let your daughter decide. Its nice for her to assert a little independence in choosing a gift

She should ask him if gifts are important to him and how he would like to celebrate birthdays going forward. My dh and I agreed no gifts for birthdays would be our plan. (We give a birthday gift to the kids but not to each other.) I bake a cake and buy ice cream, and we all sing happy birthday to him, and he gives brachos to everyone. When it’s my birthday, he doesn’t bake but will usually buy some special dessert for me, which we all enjoy together as a family. We’re happy celebrating in a warm and happy but not expensive way. Shanah rishona is a good time to set reasonable expectations about spending (unless gifts are really important to your family).
