In addition to the things mentioned above, we also

1. Raised our deductibles on car insurance and saved quite a bit on monthly premiums.
2. Keep the thermostat set to 65 degrees F in the winter, and just run a space heater in the room we are in. Ditto in the summer. No a/c except a few rooms. We live in those rooms in the summer.
3. Buy clothes from thrift shops and discount stores. Shop end of season sales. Most kids toys come from yard sales for 50 cents to $1.
4. Wear a synthetic sheitel so I don't have to pay for the sheitel macher to wash and style.
5. Really think about purchases. We don't buy things we don't need.
6. Gladly accept any and all hand-me-downs. Things we can't use we pass on to others.
7. For larger purchases, we save in advance so we can pay cash. We do not carry credit card balances. That's wasted money. Sometimes it means doing without, but I'd rather do without than have a debt over my head.
8. Eat out very, very rarely.

I'm sure there is more, but I can't think at the moment.

We also belong to a wholesale club. We buy things like diapers and even kosher grape juice in bulk and save LOTS of money. Even lightbulbs we can spend $4 or $5 for a dozen at the wholesale place and at a normal supermarket you can spend that on 2 or 3. I really recommend Costco or BJ's to anyone with kinderlach! Very Happy

I also go to the dollar store a lot. I even buy makeup there! Brand names that just need a new home because they are 'out of season'.

Also, I wear a lot of my sisters clothes she doesn't like anymore and my son has tons of hand-me-downs that are in perfect condition.

We save on heating bills by keeping the thermostat low (wear sweaters and undershirts on all the kids) and we put plastic on all the windows and made sure the doors are all sealed.

Also we use cloth diapers to save on that expense.

Really really think about each purchase. Think about how our grandparents lived and how in comparison we really do live in luxury. Since I stopped working full time, part of my job is to save money.

Wow how do you have the time and patience for that? All I can say is you are amazing because I do not know anyone who used cloth dipers anymore. By the way don't they leak?

Be very careful at the dollar stores and discounters like Big Lots to check the expiration dates. I had a pile of applesauces for lunch at 50 cents a 6 pack only to notice that the date was a week before. They left those old things on the shelf the next two times I was in that store. I was glad I hadn't ended up with them in my kids' lunches. Even on makeup, personal items, etc., there is a "better-by" date on the package. The money saved isn't worth getting sick in that case.

Willow, see this topic on cloth diapers in Natural Parenting

http://imamother.com/forum/vie.....0f61e

The diaper laundry is actually much easier than regular laundry.
