where do you find good potatoes for potato kugel?

this time of year, potatoes are awful.

I usually get a nice crust after 1hr baking on 180c.

now kugel stays awfully pale and has a diff smell. I can tell right away after an hr if the kugel darkens that there is hope for the kugel to be good. if not its doomed from the start.

anyone happy with their kugel - please tell me which potatoes you buy and from where.

I have tried white Nadine potatoes and Vivaldi - absolutely awful - threw out full sack.

I am pretty sure the red potatoes tesco sells and red roosters are the same. But not 100%. They look the same.

If I can't get peeled potatoes I just use tesco baking potatoes because they're big and easier to peel than smaller potatoes and nobody ever tastes a difference whichever one I use.

I find the ones sold in the kosher shops don't seem to be as good as the ones I get from the supermarkets. I bought once from one of the local kosher shops and I was wondering why everything I had made didn't taste as good, then I realised I was using different potatoes.
I buy the basic white potatoes from any of the supermarkets and I don't have an issue.

The ' Extra Special Marabel Baking Potatoes' from Asda are top for potato Kugel . But you have to be very careful because on occasions, they can be from Israel.
The 'Harmony ' variety from Asda is also very good. But it's not always in season.
Vivaldi, particularly from Sainsburys are supposed to be good too. I personally have not tried it but others have told me they are very happy with them.

Yes! They have two types.
You would be looking for the Baking ones.
They also used to sell Vivaldi salad Potatoes which I used to use for Potato Salad. They were the best by far.
