What can I wash on chol hamoed and how strict is it?
Are non-clothing items allowed? (towels, linen...)
Ironing?

Nothing may be washed unless you have a baby / toddler that you need to wash for.
In the case of towels, it is preferable to purchase new ones rather than wash.

Ironing is forbidden.

It is especially important to ensure before Yom Tov that one has enough clothing, socks, shirts, underwear, towels etc for all the family.

If you are right now in a very compromised situation, ask your LOR.

Depends on the ages and also if they can't keep themselves clean. That's why it's best to consult with ones LOR if an a compromised situation.

I don't think it's this straight forward
Everyone holds differently.
I wash minimally for toddlers/ babies, and heard that I can add my stuff to their loads.
I know someone who washes almost regularly, though not sure they asked.
But it's very individual, and I would recommend to ask your lor.

I was brought up with my parents not washing a thing!

My parents literally bought new stuff if there wasnt enough, but they could afford it.

Dont know for certain that you cant wash anything(!) but for some of us we cant afford to buy more.

I Second asking a rov.

Agree that everyone should ask a shaila. I was told I can't add anything extra in with my kids' laundry.

As you can see, just like with many other things, you need to ask your own rav, because there are different opinions.
I wash my kids laundry up until about age 9 or 10. If I have my own stuff that MUST be thrown in, I will do that, but it doesn’t happen too often.

Do you all have 5+ nice white shirts for each of your yeshiva bachurim as well as multiple suits? The cost is prohibitive for me but there’s no way they can make it through five full days (never mind the three separate nights) with just the 2-3 white shirts and one good suit they each have.

Yes I do have one suit for my boys but even if it got dirty, I couldn't wash it... And yes 5 shirts, we get a couple new ones as needed and supplement with old ones.

I was told I can do laundry for any katan not able to keep themselves clean. The year I made a bris in sukkos with 2 3 day Yom Tovs (meaning 7 white shirts!) my rav said I could do laundry even for oldest who was 8 I guess?

Not to add other items and preferable to buy new if you can (this differs from the 9 days) unless there's a significant loss (davar ha'aveid) or impossible to get.
