Is there any jewish origin or is it really an Italian name?

I would love to name my baby bella but my DH is unsure where it comes from and is hesitant to use it if it has no jewish origins.

Some say baila is really the name bilha but somehow along the way got distorted (like many words do). I would think bella is bilha as well.

The name "Bella" has been in our family for many generations. In the part of the family that came from white Russia, Lithuania, that area.
We also have Russian neighbors whose daughter's name is Bella.
That's all I know ...

The name is Baila spelled בילא.
It's considered a "Yiddish" name, but doesn't actually mean anything in Yiddish.
It's probably either a distortion of Bilhah, or from the Italian Bella - beautiful.
It's also an acronym for ברוך ה' לעולם אמן.

Some Yiddish names come from words in Yiddish. Liba means beloved, Shayna or Shaindel mean beautiful, Hinda is a deer or gazelle, Gittel is good, Fayga is a bird, Frayda is happy etc.
I've been told some Yiddish names came from local pronunciation of Biblical names. Masha is from Miriam, Sosha is Sarah, Chantshe is from Chana, Basha is Basya etc.
Some Yiddish names are adapted from German or other foreign names like the words in Yiddish adapted from German or others languages like Polish and Russian.
The name Bella might come from Bilhah but more likely it's a German name that Jews used too, like Ella and Rella.
