Iy”h I am having a baby girl . Based on an agreement I have with my husband, it’s his turn to pick a name . His wants to name after his grandmother, whose name was Menya ….( Yiddish/ Ukraine ) .He is pretty sure that it was Menya, not Manya . We have no idea what Hebrew name that originated from . Based on my research the only 2 names I can think of is Miriam or Menucha . Can anyone think of anything else ? I don’t like Menucha at all, Miriam I am ok with.
What could be a possible English name ? I think Mary is too Christian, I thought of Maya or Mia . Any other ideas ?

I know a Menya.
Not sure of origin but it is used as a Yiddish name.
Most likely Miriam and not Menucha (which was not commonly use back in the “heim”).
You should also confirm the actual name with family members as you said your DH is “not sure”. Probably make sure before using!
As far as secular names, I never understood. If you are already choosing a name, who cares if it ‘fits’ with the Judaic name?
There is absolutely no correlation unless: a) you are using the secular name of the person child is named after or b) you specifically want to use the secular name (if there is an equivalent) of the Judaic name.
So, if you are using Miriam instead of Menya (or doing something like Miriam Menya), well then you have a “secular” name built in as Miriam is also the secular translation of…Miriam!
And again, if you want a different secular name, well then, just pick one you like!

I gave most of my kids English names on birth certificate, no matter whom they were named after
One kid I didn’t & honestly it’s a headache
Ex: Yitzchok is Isaac on birth certificate etc
Menya no matter the spelling I wouldn’t straight out use.
So I am thinking I am going w/Miriam .

Minya would be Minna/Mindl/Mindi.
Menya I have no clue. I would go with MiriM or Minna for this child.

Also does your husband know where his grandmother is buried? Maybe her hebrew name is on her matzevah? Or if he knows her last name and where she is from you can look on Yad Vashem's site?

There is a Lubavitch family with the name Manya but the actual name was Mariasha Malka. Look into it a little more, you may discover that the name originated as a nickname for something else. Or ask a rav, if they do weddings or divorces they need to know about names and may be able to help.

Michal is derived from מי כא-ל, who is like GD. I think that would be it.
