Which one do you say? And where in the world are you?

I know in SA they say “learners.”

It has become quite popular in progressive districts in the US, as well as in graduate education programs, to call students "learners."

USA Depends on context. Student can be used for anything though you wouldn't say "preschool students." . Pupils is a little old-fashioned and prissy, applies usually to elementary school, and usually used only by teachers and administration, almost never by parents and certainly not by students themselves. It's not a grammatical rule but just the way the language has developed.

Learners is not technically incorrect but awkward usage except in phrases like " lifelong learners" or "natural learners" or "learners of foreign languages," where what you're emphasizing is the fact that they're acquiring knowledge or skills regardless of how they're doing so. Student implies a structured course of study, whether self-taught or within the framework of some institution. You wouldn't call someone a college learner.
