We have the name Merele (female, pronounced 'meh-reh-leh') in my family. It has always been given with a second name and those girls have been called by that second name. However, we were thinking of giving the name but using the nickname 'Relli'. Not that we know the gender, but if it is a girl...
What do you think?

I know a Merela, a Relli, a Rela and a Raila.
I like the name Relli, but maybe that's only because I like the person with that name

I know a Meryl (like Streep, but it's her Jewish name and she goes by it with another noticeably Jewish name - think Meryl Chana) and I think that's great!

It sounds like the word "merrily", but that's a good thing, very positive connotation.
Just curious , what does the name mean in Yiddish (or what language it is from?)

I hate the name Relli. It sounds so stupid to me.
But what do you care? Do you know me? No.
You do you.

I really like the nickname Relli.
I actually know someone named Rochelle who goes by Relli.
Has a nice sound - go for it!

You're right, I'm just curious what the general reaction would be.
I don't know the source for the name, or if we'll even use it. But glad to see the general consensus (from like 10 ppl ) is positive

You can't pick a name based on the nickname. DD was barely 3 when she decided she didn't want to go by her nickname anymore. You have to like and be able to call your kid by the real name and not rely on a cutesy version of it

True.
But I think that in general, nicknames stick. For the small percentage that insist on changing their names, so be it.
Personally, I wouldn't give a 3-year-old much of a choice for their name - and in general, I give my (currently) 3yo daughter a lot of freedom to make choices, I'm not restrictive - but I don't think they have the maturity to decide what they should be called. An older child, I hear. I had friends change their names/the spelling of their names as 12/13 year olds.

Sometimes nicknames do evolve and even early. We have a child who is still going by a baby nickname post high school. It just stuck, although additional nicknames were given by a friend group and are used outside the family. I could also see the nickname evolving like Relli belly or even Ellie. These things often have a life of their own. Mirele feels more old world, like Yiddish, and google says it has an Eastern European origin. The only Relli I know is secular Israeli. I also know a Merri, a Merilee, and a Miri. All are nice people and the names never struck me as unusual. If the name fits your child, your family, and your taste, why not?

I really like the Relli that I know. She's a really nice and solid person (low 20's).
