Do you eat candy canes? If not, is it because it has a non Jewish origin? And, how do you describe yourself religiously? It's interesting that it has an OU on it.

I'm don't discriminate with candy. If someone gave me one and it was kosher I'd eat it that being said I don't see them for sale where I live and don't NEED them so am not going out of my way to find them.

1. I think it's folklore based on what I've read. (and yes, I did also have these concerns)
2. there was, if anything, a convenient appropriation/assignment of "meaning" behind an already existing confection and even shape.
So, yes, I would eat kosher candy canes if I particularly wanted to.

I’ve never heard of candy canes being not Jewish. I don’t purchase the readily available, kosher nativity chocolate, but it never occurred to me not to buy candy canes. Is there significance besides being a candy that is associated with the winter?

The folklore is that the hooks are meant to look like shepherd's hooks to remind one of those who visited the baby.
the white candy with red stripes already existed, and probably the shape had nothing to do with that--there's no indication it did.
Saying the shape has to do with the letter "J" isn't even grounded in identified folklore.

A lot of x-mas and Easter treats are kosher certified. Why not? They are already being made on good equipment with good ingredients.

I never thought of the canes as being the shepherd hooks. That takeh makes sense. I'm glad I'm not in the parasha anymore because I would really look into it then.
I used to give them for shalach manos - you could get boxes 90% off, 10 cents each.
You know what I miss? Kosher old fashioned candy.

Is there any CY chocolate that's not specifically made by a frum company?

Totally, if I happened to have any. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them, but if they had a reliable hechsher and happened to be on a mad crazy sale, I would and I have. Turn them upside down and call them a J for Jewish if it bothers you.
That said, I wouldn't put them in MM or offer them as-is to guests because someone is bound to tell me off. I'd break them up into pieces and serve in a dish as crushed peppermint (if I didn't already polish them all off myself).

I happen to love peppermint. I don’t have an issue with them.

Many moons ago, when my grown DD was in BY, the school gave them out as a treat one time during play rehearsal.
They were cheap, post holiday.
