If only one parent is flying with their kids, do they need a letter of permission from other parent for domestic U.S flight

If different last name its a problem? I'm flying motsay shabat with my 10 year old who has a diff last name bec I still go by my maiden name

My kids flew with my mother. Different last names. There was no issue.

I flew to Israel with my kids and without dh. No issues.

Technically they can make issues because one parent can be trying to kidnap the kids. I was at the airport once in jfk flying to Israel and the gate agent was giving a father a hard time about flying with his son. I would bring a letter from dh just in case.

Only an issue if flying internationally. Then you would need a notarized letter from your husband

On domestic flights, kids don’t need to show ID. I just flew alone with my kids for winter break and no one said a thing. Never heard of this being an issue. I’ve also flown alone with them internationally without anyone stopping or questioning me.

Canada was the only country that ever asked for a letter from my husband but they let me through without it on the end.

I still go by my maiden name and gave me problems internationally when I traveled with my baby.
How do I know it's your son, maybe you are kidnapping a baby?
They asked if I have a birth certificate, bh I had a picture on my phone.
I believe the check in lady was being anti semitic....

I have a different last name, and I’ve never been asked for a letter, or a birth certificate, or even been questioned in any way. I think technically you need the letter, but most agents don’t ask questions.
Edit: this wax only domestic, I think international is different.

I mean if you Google flying with child with different last name.... There are lots of responses the and the idea that I got that sums it up "best to have a letter and not need it then to not have one and be detained."

I have flown internationally myself with kids a few times before I changed my last name. They never once asked me for proof that they were my kids. I did always bring their birth certificates just in case, but would have never thought of bringing a letter, let alone a notarized letter.

Flew within the US, no issues at all flying solo with kids and no letter.

They usually ask dd what her name is and where she is going-I guess to make sure she is going willingly? Otherwise, it's never been a problem. But I have brought documenatation just in case.
