I did not take an extreme example. OP said they each ordered one small thing (she said minimum) and the other couple ordered drinks, wine, apps, main, and dessert.
You literally said it is the social norm to split the bill and you said if they can't afford to do that, to decline the invitation.
So no, I'm not sure what you meant. I thought you meant exactly what you said.

She said they looked at the menu in advance and ordered the minimum of what they could order. I used a Friends reference for fun. But yes, a side salad and a small soup is pretty much the minimum.

I just reread the OP. She does not say she didn’t order mains. Maybe she can clarify.
