My oldest child will he 12 at the end of this month. At this time, his health records will become part of his own account (no longer linked to mine) and he will have to consent for me to view them. It's not the biggest deal to get around, I'll have his username and password so I'll be able to get in, but I'm angry at the principle of the matter. In what universe does it make sense to let a 12 year old have control over their health records? A neurotypical 12 year can't handle that, let alone my adhd kid who needs to request monthly medication refills via mychart for his adhd medications because he has adhd and will have enough trouble remembering to do it as an adult, let alone at 12. Why is this rule a thing? What is wrong with our lawmakers???? This is absurd!

Yup just wait until you can't schedule medical appointments for him without having him on the phone to give consent. The world has gone mad.

Yup. I actually posted this sometime ago when I was signing up to get services for my son because of ADHD.
He needed to sign a consent form to allow me to see his records.
He is all of 13 what in the world does he know about medications and doctors appointments etc.
I am in NY so I don’t know how it is any place else but this is so absurd. What are the lawmakers thinking?

The doctors don't want parents not involved either. The doctors would much rather have involved parents supportive of their kids' health needs. These laws were passed or policies implemented due to some cases where some older kids were not able to get the care they needed without doing so independent or privately from their parents, because some parents are uninvolved or just bad parents. So, for example, there were kids with STDs and pregnancies because they couldn't get input from an adult to manage their health---either because they needed their parent and there was no parent, or they, many times for legitimate reasons, did not want to disclose certain social behavior with their parents.

My friends teenaged son suffers from severe social anxiety. When she tried to set up an appointment with a mental health specialist she was informed the son needed to make the call. However due to his social anxiety he simply couldn’t…….. Banging head

This was created to make it really easy for trans kids and teen abortions. That’s the answer.

no it was actually to prevent older child STDs and pregnancies---before an abortion would be necessary, and it had nothing to do with transitions either.

I'm in NJ. I do understand that there are some thorny issues with older teens approaching 18. But 12 is ridiculous! My soon-to-be 12 still needs to be reminded to brush his teeth and close the door behind him when he leaves the house. It should be a given that me and dh are still in charge of his medical care 🤦‍♀️

This is probably the age that girls can most likely start becoming pregnant from zxl abuse (including from parents who wouldn't consent to their seeing a doctor about it).

That’s insane and probably the office doesn’t allow him to come to appointments without an adult . This world has become insane

Sorry. But this is old news. 10 years ago I needed copies of my child's medical records.. they wouldn't release it to me because he's 12 and needs to sign the release. Problem with the situation was that she was present but unable to sign since she is disabled. They saw her sitting in a wheelchair with her hands visibly bent, with clear speech issues but wouldn't relent. There was major fuss and higher ups involved and I had to physically hold her
hand and help her sign an "x" in lieu of her signature.
