My not yet 2 year old climbed out of the crib for the first time this morning. Bh sister was awake and told us right away because he can climb up the bunkbed.
So now what do we do? Switching rooms isn't an option. I asked dh if he can remove the bottom rung of the bunkbed and he said it's not possible.
I know he also climbs out of a pack n play.
If not for the bunkbed issue I would switch him to a bed.
Any ideas?

You need to switch him to a bed. Once he can climb out of the crib, it isn't safe anymore.

I guess my OP wasn't clear.
My problem is that my baby/toddler climbs up his sister's bunkbed if unsupervised. Until now I wasn't worried because he didn't climb out of his crib so he couldn't climb up the bunkbed. But now that I need to switch him to a toddler bed it is too dangerous since if unsupervised he will climb up the bunkbed.

Can your DD get up to the top bunk without any ladder?
If so you can remove the ladder altogether.

When we lived in an apartment, my then toddler son used to climb up into his brother's bunkbed. He'd go in the room during the day and climb it. We removed the ladder and my older son would climb up without the ladder. (though it didn't take long for my then toddler to figure out how to climb up without the ladder too)

The ladder is not removable. It is part of the nailed in wood frame.

maybe a gate around the bunk bed so he can't get in? not sure if that could work or he could be climb over it

If the rungs aren't removable, can you saw through a rung or two instead of removing them? Basically to cut the rungs off, if they don't unscrew.

1. If your crib has a taller side and a shorter side rail, make sure the shorter side is against the wall and the taller one faces out.
2. Take the spring out from under the mattress and put the mattress directly in the floor. It should reach the bottom of the side rails so theres no risk of getting stuck between (obviously you need to make sure with your crib). If there is a gap, you can put a thick mat or something else underneath the mattress to close that gap.
It then should be too high for him to climb out.
