Everyone else figures it out somehow, even if they’re not rich. |

It seems like many of you are not aware but many restaurants have a mandatory 18% tip which goes straight to the owner and the waiters get nothing of it. Which is why many times they ask if you want to tip on top of the 18%
ask any manager of these eateries

Again just because tipping is theoretically optional doesn't mean that it isn't expected in most situations. |
It's pretty standard in the industry, not limited to frum restaurants in nj.

I did not tip my shopper 30$ for shopping / delivering an expensive electronic (one item). But I also didn’t tip the one who worked for ten minutes collecting detailed school supplies and half were out of stock 3$.
I tip around 6-10 usually, it’s often 20% but not always if it’s big ticket items, those are usually expensive orders with few things- e.g 2 packages of diapers.. I don’t do full grocery orders but I can imagine that being more. |
This exactly. I tip based on work involved, so I don't need to tip more for a steak dinner than pizza delivery. Same with pharmacy delivery a small light package can be as expensive as several grocery boxes.

So it seems that Instacart shoppers DO get at least the minimum hourly wage - at least in NYC.
This is from indeed.com:
How much does Instacart in New York pay?
The average Instacart salary ranges from approximately $37,301 per year for Store Shopper to $75,000 per year for Sales Operations Manager. Average Instacart hourly pay ranges from approximately $17.00 per hour for Shift Leader to $39.30 per hour for Personal Shopper.
So they are not like waiters for whom the majority of their income comes from tips.
While I do tip 10% - they see the tip before they accept the job and can decide whether or not to take it.

Not familiar with yellow cabs. |
I’m in Brooklyn and I tip car service drivers.

These figures are misleading.
There is no guaranteed minimum wage in New York City for gig workers like Instacart.
The wages you are posting are for STORE SHOPPERS which are paid by the hour and don't receive tips. They are employees and not gig workers or independent contractors. They report to the store and work a set number of hours.
Sales Operation Manager and Shift Leader would also be some form of employee and not a shopper who delivers.
I think the figure for "personal shopper" is high based on other statistics I have seen.
The majority of income for instacart shoppers indeed comes from tips. They are only paid $7 per batch to shop - that is the amount whether they have 2 or 3 or 1 customer being shopper for in a batch. Increases in batch pay are unusual and based on extreme heavy weights like several cases of water or very long distances to deliver - I.e. over 20 miles.

Interesting. Is it common in your circles? Or just what you do?
Let's say the trip was 8 you just give them 9?

Agree, it's common practice. With uber it's different since the drivers are not salaried workers. Uber I tip based on the cost of the ride (which is ever changing). For example if my usual route is on average $15 but today it's $20 I don't tip. If it's cheaper than usual I try to make it up with a tip.
