He never used to do it but now will pocket food in his mouth and refuse to spit it out or swallow. He could hold it in his mouth for hours. Please give me ideas to get him to get rid of it? He’s just 2 so can’t really reason or bribe him.

Stick your pinky in and use a hook like motion to scoop it out.

I think I might keep him at the table until he swallows or spits it out, partially for safety reasons. You can also try offering water. That works for babies who are learning to eat.

Babies and kids do funny things sometimes. I would not stick my finger in and take it out. I would just let him do it and I think he will stop eventually. Same thing like kids eating sand or dirt.. perfectly normal they are exploring the world around them and they will be fine. My opinion. We don’t understand what goes on in a little kids mind they are just learning and growing.

I know a kid who it was because she didn't realize she had food in her mouth if it was bland. Making more spicy food solved the problem

he’s a low tone kid in general.

Usually due to oral hyposensitivity.
Is he getting speech therapy to target the feeding issues?

Are you working with any therapists? A speech therapist or OT can help you figure this out.

No, speech is the one area he doesn’t lag in. This is a new issue… was hoping to avoid having to take him to 3 different therapists.

my 2 year old is still learning how to take a bite. swallow, then go for the next bite. He can therefore stuff his face and then have a hard time knowing what to do with it bec his mouth is so full. I was told its age appropriate

My low muscle tone child did this too. We made up a song about chewing and swallowing.. the other kids would all chew together then take a big swallow. This child wanted to be part of the fun so when everyone was eating together at the table it worked.
I wouldn’t make a big deal about it. That’s how eating disorders develop. The only time I would say something was when we were going in the car and I was worried that the pretzel from 20 minutes earlier could be a chocking hazard.
I would tell my child swallow so we can leave and that usually worked. If not I would suggest spitting it out.
It sometimes just feels good like a sensory thing. Don’t make a big deal now.

I'm a speech therapist. That's why I asked.
Speech encompasses more than "sounds"- its feeding, language, cognition, dysphagia.
I recommend going to a SLP trained in myofunctional therapy.

Is food spilling out of his mouth? Does he drool? Can he form a cohesive bolus of food before he swallows or he cant properly chew his food into one ball?

He has a very narrow palate so food sometimes gets stuck in it (especially pb sandwich). I don’t find the food falls out a lot though he does drool somewhat. I don’t know about a ball of food…
