My boys love Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales, graphic novels about US History, and read them over and over.
They aren’t inappropriately violent, but they deal with various wars, slavery, etc. and will get a bit irreverent/gruesome with true historical details to get kids interested. (ex. one fourth-wall-breaking narrator is an executioner, etc.)
