Age?

You can start off by reading storybooks of what resulted when kids lyed. You can also talk to the child and discuss how nobody will believe him anymore because they don't trust him in a nice and positive way.

How about a sticker chart, where your child gets a smiley face for telling the truth and a sad face for lying and they know that everytime they get 10 smileys they get a prize - but know that a sad face cancels out a smiley?
We've started to do that with my dd as she was being naughty in gan and it got to the point where she was in time out every day, since we started the chart she's only been in time out a couple of times. And we've also told her teacher about it, so if at gan she starts to get wild her teacher will mention the chart at home and she calms down straight away, also when I pick her up her teacher will say to me infront of my dd, she was such a good girl today you can give her a smiley.
But I guess it depends on the age of your kid.
