Whats the cheapest sensible idea to cover a small backyard, to prevent wild growth?
Are there better options that fake grass?
Can you lay wet grass in a backyard, directly over wet earth? I googled and I see its best when you prepare the ground underneath with material made to be put under fake grass, before you lay the fake grass. Is it necessary?
What are affordable options besides fake grass?
Handyman recommendations to do this (in BP) would be appreciated.

Even with fake grass the overgrowth does eventually come through. Have you read the Lakewood threads? They mow their grass weekly.
We had a contractor in BP who treated and destroyed our backyard weeds with chemicals and then put down rubber tiles for the kids to play, and this was supposed to be it. Ha. Weeds were growing through the rubber tall and strong next summer fully.
Just expect a yearly expense of backyard maintenance.

A thick layer of wood chips.
As long as the sun doesn’t reach the earth, things won’t grow.
