A friend just told me they had security lines of almost 3 hours for el al last week! Is this typical? Should one get there 4 hours in advance to check in?

No, that's really long. I've done it a few times with 3 hours and it was fine.

I think last week you still had boys etc going back after bein hazmanim and it should settle down by now

No experience with this airline/ airport but you definitely need 3+ hours. I'd aim for 4 hours.

Domestic in a nyc airport even if you don't check baggage you need 2 hours & elal does additional security.

My son arrived less than 2 hours to departure due to crazy traffic and Bh made his flight.
I’d aim for 3 hours. 4 is overdone.
