My washer and dryer is in the basement and its mildly annoying but I really don't do laundry every day. We also have a chute which I highly recommend. All the clothing goes down and stays out of sight. Minimal shlepping.
I am really considering putting a second set of machines on the main floor in a closet that shares a wall with the bathroom so the water hookup is basically there. I like the idea of being able to do 2 loads at a time.

What's an upstairs? JK. I live in an apartment and my laundry room is together in my bathroom in the back of the apartment. My other apartment had the washing machine in the kitchen.

I guess the upside is plenty of hanging space. Still not worth it. I dread doing laundry |
Why lug laundry DOWN the stairs? Put it in one of those drawstring bags that kids take to camp and toss it down the stairs. Just yell "Look out below!" or "Fore!" or "Timber!" first.

I live in a bilevel with 3 bedrooms on the same floor as the kitchen, dining room. My laundry room is a closet with just enough space for a stackable, nothing else. Even the detergent is stored in the bathroom nearby.
DH wanted to make me a laundry room downstairs where we have one more bedroom, playroom, garage, storage, and I said No thank you. I want more space for the laundry ceremony, but not at the cost of it being on a different floor from the bedrooms and the main living area. I will rather wait patiently until we can afford to extend and build a laundry room then.
In a typical colonial layout home, either way, you'll be going up and down the stairs a lot to get your laundry done. The only question is if you'll be shlepping the laundry along with you.

I have my laundry room on the second floor near my bedrooms. I'm hoping I will be able to have it on the first floor in my next house. I don't go up at all during the day, so I'm always behind in laundry
