My washer and dryer is in the basement and its mildly annoying but I really don't do laundry every day. We also have a chute which I highly recommend. All the clothing goes down and stays out of sight. Minimal shlepping.

I am really considering putting a second set of machines on the main floor in a closet that shares a wall with the bathroom so the water hookup is basically there. I like the idea of being able to do 2 loads at a time.

What's an upstairs? JK. I live in an apartment and my laundry room is together in my bathroom in the back of the apartment. My other apartment had the washing machine in the kitchen.

Down in unfinished basement and I hate it. I don't have the energy to lug heavy loads up and down 2 flight of stairs.

I guess the upside is plenty of hanging space. Still not worth it. I dread doing laundry

I used to have it in the basement it was horrible, shlepping laundry up and down 2 flights, forgetting about it, bed wetting was a killer.
I moved it upstairs. Life changer. It's always right where I need it. No shlepping at all.

Why lug laundry DOWN the stairs? Put it in one of those drawstring bags that kids take to camp and toss it down the stairs. Just yell "Look out below!" or "Fore!" or "Timber!" first.

How do people not need a normal space to wash and fold laundry? Can't Believe It

I guess your definition of "normal" is "what I'm used to, period."
I have a very "normal" space. Washer in the kitchen of my small apartment. No dryer. Multiple collapsible drying racks plus a rope across the U-shaped shower rod for dripping wet things. Most things I fold in the air but for more complicated folds I use the changing table or a bed. It's not what you're used to and you would view it with contempt, but then I'm quite competent.

I live in a bilevel with 3 bedrooms on the same floor as the kitchen, dining room. My laundry room is a closet with just enough space for a stackable, nothing else. Even the detergent is stored in the bathroom nearby.

DH wanted to make me a laundry room downstairs where we have one more bedroom, playroom, garage, storage, and I said No thank you. I want more space for the laundry ceremony, but not at the cost of it being on a different floor from the bedrooms and the main living area. I will rather wait patiently until we can afford to extend and build a laundry room then.

In a typical colonial layout home, either way, you'll be going up and down the stairs a lot to get your laundry done. The only question is if you'll be shlepping the laundry along with you. Wink

I have my laundry room on the second floor near my bedrooms. I'm hoping I will be able to have it on the first floor in my next house. I don't go up at all during the day, so I'm always behind in laundry Banging head

I have it near the bedrooms, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
No one entering my house knows it laundry day ever.
Laundry doesn’t need to make trips up and down. (Well my basement bedroom my kids do need to take it- I have a stackable there but it isn’t great condition).

I anyway usually go up mid day to put toddler for a nap, to change into my wig, or whatever so it’s never an issue with load changing for me.
When the cleaning lady is around on laundry day I prep the piles in the morning and whoever is upstairs when the load finishes does the swap.
