Is it still a possibility for a child to be born with cystic fibrosis? A specialist we recently consulted with a concern about our child would like us to go for a "sweat test" to rule out cystic fibrosis. A few questions: a) wouldn't it be evident that a child has cystic fibrosis as a baby? Can a child really row out of toddlerhood with no symptoms (other than the one he displayed by the specialist, which is unrelated to mucous or breathing issues) b) If both my spouse and I underwent genetic testing (dor yesharim) and were found compatible would it be possible to still have a child with cystic fibrosis? I am very anxious and all thew labs were closed till tomorrow. As they say, knowledge is power so I am trying to get as much info as possible.

Unfortuantley, there is a remote chance that a child could still be born with CF even with dor yesharim, This can happen if the parents have an unusaul genetic make up of CF. dor yesharim tests for the typical strains of cf common amoung jewish community. Do remember the chances of what I just wrote are very rare.

Keep in mind a sweat test can vary on results, depending on the lab, It can give a borderline result requiring another test. Going to a different testing facility is a good idea if a 2nd test is necessary. If a sweat test is positive, it will probably be followed by a blood test or a cheek swab.

Hatzlacha Rabba to you and I hope you hear good news very soon.

I had a child born with a rare genetic syndrome. My husband and I were both tested and came out negative. It is what they call a "fluke". B"H that means we didn't need to worry about future children. B"h we have other healthy children now. Unfortunately this happens sometimes. Good luck and if you need chizuk pm me.

My child also was tested for CF, even though were weren't carriers. He's really small, and they wanted to rule it out. As others have said, there are rare cases when it happens.

The standard CF test that dor yesharim tests for is for the most common mutation. At this time, there are over 1000 genes responsible for Cystic Fibrosis. It is possible to have a rarer mutation for CF. good luck with the testing. BTW, there are many other conditions that mimic CF.
