My child was just diagnosed with Pandas. Doctor prescribed 14 days of antibiotics. What can I expect? Does it normally get better right away?

It really depends on the case. I'm surprised he said two weeks. Do you mean your dc needs to be seen again in two weeks and you will re-evaluate? Each case severity is different. One kid of mine was on abx for six months and his sudden onset OCD disappeared. My other DC was on for a full year until the ticks went away. But every time dd gets sick she ticks a few days after fever but then it goes away (instead of sticking around and getting worse and worse and worse)

There is a difference between a chil who's illness symptoms are behavioral and just needs a regular does of antibiotics v. One who has a full blown case of pandas/pans.
A regular illness but presented with behavioral symptoms will be fine treating with the standard treatment dosage. A full blown cade of pandas following proper protocol (dr Shulman, Dr T, etc.) Can take approximately one yr including slowly weaning off antibiotics.
Most local pediatricians or PA's who 'believe' in pandas will treat with 30days of treatment. They are not aware of full long term protocol and need for motrin, vitamin d, omega 3etc.
Many people unfortunately who treat with 30 day treatment keep relapsing and never fully get rid of the illness.

Is it one antibiotic for 6 months/a year or do you keep changing? Doesn't the child become immune to it over time?

I can take years of monitoring.
Initial antibiotics should be prescribed 30 days then appt to come back and see how it's going and continue antibiotics.

You have to go to a dr who specializes in treating pandas.

My kids have been on several long term courses of abx for pandas. The absolute shortest I ever did was 30 days, and then we continued with herbal antibiotics for *at least* another 2 or 3 months.

This is always in conjunction with other supportive treatments.

Herbs — broad spectrum herbal antibiotics like oil of oregano and olive leaf extract, and also more specific herbal protocols to target specific infections and viruses.

One herbal protocol that’s specific for pandas and covers strep plus brain inflammation/cytokine cascade is cryptolepis+Chinese skullcap+kudzu

Supplements: we do a lot of different forms of magnesium, trace minerals, electrolytes. Also lots of b vitamins, usually a complex plus extra b1 and b2.
Supplements to help with anxiety and ocd such as NAC, inositol, Gaba, l theanine, 5htp
Detox support: glutathione, epsom salt footbaths, activated charcoal

Diet: as close to gluten, dairy and soy free as possible, limited sugar, dyes and msg (it’s not lost on me at all how close to impossible this is to pull off with kids in our culture)

Motrin, Benadryl and robitussin for bad flares to take down brain inflammation

Digestive enzymes, probiotics, parasite cleanse, yeast cleanse for gut health

Constitutional homeopathy with resilience naturopathic

Air filters and water filters

We are also addressing mouth and airway issues that we suspect are contributing.

I'm really freaking out now... My DC started displaying symptoms about 3 months ago. I got her tested last week. Her numbers were just above 300 (normal is up to 100). Doctor said it's not very severe. Prescribed abx 14 days.

Should I go to another specialist? Were all of you who did these long treatments have kids with much higher numbers?

The numbers really don't really matter that much. It's more about the severity of the symptoms and how long they persist. How is your child doing now?

See if you can get your dr to rx a longer course. And/or when you run out switch to herbal antibiotics.

BUMP: Did 10 days in June. got better. Relapsed shortly after
Doing 60 days now. (we're up to 40ish now). She's definitely getting better.
What's do we need to do next? I want to knock out the Pandas completely, but I'm so lost...
