Water getting harder, or products more dilute?

I'm wondering if cleaning products like shampoo and dishwash are getting more dilute, or if NYC water is getting harder? Lately I have to lather shampoo twice because the first time it doesn't lather at all. It used to lather immediately and I would dilute it in the bottle by at least half to keep it from lathering too much. Similarly I run through dishwashing detergent in no time. One squeeze diluted in a bowl of water used to clean a whole sinkload; now I have to use detergent full strength on a sponge and the dishes still sometimes have to be done a second time.

Regular dishwash is definitely less thick, and what they now call Ultra is about as thick as plain detergent was some years ago. However, that's not necessarily proof of anything, because thickening and opacifying agents are added to give the illusion of a richly concentrated cleaning product. I'm not judging by viscosity but by how much product is needed to do the job.

Anyone else, in NY or elsewhere notice this phenomenon?

Before you say anything, our household has shrunk, not grown, so we're doing way fewer dishes than we used to, and I've switched from shampooing daily to two or three times a week.

Haven't noticed what you're mentioning. But lately Murphy oil bottles are definitely lighter in color.
