My 18 year old daughter wants a slip dress but knows I’m uncomfortable with it. She tried one on and it is tznius according to Halacha… good length , not tight… but I’m not comfortable with the concept. Isn’t it a copy of lingerie? But very fine modest women wear it. Am I the odd 1? She returned it because she knows I don’t like it but trying to understand is it really wrong and how to give over that sensitivity

Depends how it fits and depends on the color and how it's styled too. I never thought I would find one that works for me, because I dress yeshivishe and have hips, but just found one that fits tzniusly.

Is it different than a solid color silky satin dress?

Yes silky satin that is why it reminds me of lingerie. Is it fine if the straps don’t show? She’s only wear with sweater over it
It’s solid black, she says everyone wears it with a croped cardigan over it. She’s very tznius and yeshivish
It’s in a popular Lakewood store

Wearing something over it makes it look like a plain black dress.

It sounds tznius to me.

I get how you feel. I cringed the first few times I saw it… then it became normal.
Many people are wearing it now. It doesn’t look completely like lingerie because is doesn’t have that lace trimming take slips and lingerie have.

I have not seen it with a cardigan or sweater over it.

I have seen it with a sweater/tee beneath it and it looked horrible.
I don't think it is a refined look.

Depending on the material of the slip dress, and if you daughter wears it beneath the sweater, it would probably be tznius.

I saw someone wear it with a blazer and it looked totally fine and very elegant . It looks unrefined when worn with the thin straps showing .

I don't think you need to change your opinion but she is an adult and I would not discourage her from finding her personal style. It's really hard Watching them grow up and make their own choices❤

I tried one on without anything under it or over it definitely has a lingerie vibe to it but when I put a cropped sweater over it..it's just like any skirt. I didn't get it bc the cropped sweater , hit me at the worst point between my hips and waist!

It looks like a summer nightgown, or if it's satin, like something a 1930s movie star wore in the boudoir scene of a movie that just barely made it past the censors. With a blouse or shell underneath, it looks ridiculous, because everyone knows it's not designed to be worn that way, and it's un tzanua for the same reason.

I don't consider it an elegant look, either. An upgraded nightgown is still a nightgown. Caroline Bessette Kennedy wore a satin slip wedding gown that the media hailed as the apotheosis of elegant simplicity. She looked like a woman who forgot to don her wedding gown and walked down the aisle in her underclothes. I'm surprised some little child didn't pipe up "Look, Mommy, she forgot to put on her dress!"

Wondering about this because I bought a slip dress with cropped cardigan last January and months later saw this on imamother I'm so naive. Did not realize this material is only for lingerie so was very uncomfortable to wear it. Went fall shopping and seeing this everywhere. So its considered regular clothing now ?
