I recently earned an extra amount of money besides for my regular full time job. I gave a large portion (more than maaser) to tzedaka and invested another big chunk. I have enough left to buy myself something fun. I would like to buy a designer bag, and picked one out that I like. But now that it's time to buy, I'm getting cold feet. I'm going to be honest that I love designer clothes and accessories and have a small collection of Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik shoes that makes me so happy and gives me so much confidence when I wear them. But the bag that I like has an obvious logo and I think I would feel very self conscious wearing it. My shoes are beautiful quality and style, and obviously those who know would recognize them, but they don't stand out. My kids schools have a lot of fancy moms who are dripping with diamonds and designer items, and I think a designer bag would make me feel more confident when I go to school events. But OTOH when I think about the moms who I think are very cool people and I would like to be friends with, none of them wear designer things. But I personally have more of a need for luxury items which B"H I can afford to fill in small doses. But maybe I shouldn't be indulging that need so much, especially in Elul! As you can see I am going back and forth in my thinking. Can you ladies help me with your perspectives?

I totally can't relate since those aren't the kind of things that bring me joy or confidence, but if it will make you happy go for it.

If it makes you happy, go for it.
But before you take that leap-think first for two days if you get it today will I have that same feeling of loving it in a month from now or not. This should help you narrow it down.

I say go for it. If you can afford it and you’ll enjoy it the whole time. It’s funny we’re just in Thailand where they have lots of knock offs, but I’m totally not into that so I wouldn’t even know if it looks real or not. And I was it would last as long as just think it’s funny that I really have no idea. Although they did have a real mall with the real stores, but I didn’t even go into them. I could afford to buy them, but it doesn’t bring me even a drop of happiness, but if it brings you then I think you should get it. I heard that these things last mini mini mini years. They really are very good quality.

If you say it will make you feel self conscious wearing it, you may even end up not using it because you're too embarrassed to go out with it.
Complete waste of money, if you ask me.

I love beautiful things as well - I love purses but for the most part I am not a huge fan of the heavily logo purses except that Goyard and Vuitton make great totes for shlepping and I have a Gucci Marmont which does have the GG clasp, a Gucci Disco crossbody and a Chanel Wallet on Chain and Classic Flap - I like these because all of them are fairly versatile in terms of style as they can be worn as a shoulder bag; cross body or even hand held.
I tend to like the bags which rely on the style rather than logo branding - Chloe, Bottega Veneta and Celine for example. For the most part I wear my Balenciaga bags because they are the most functional and I feel most comfortable wearing them.
Which specific bag are you considering?

Buy it or don’t buy it
But you don’t have a ‘need’ for luxury items. You have a desire. A taavah. That’s fine but that’s not a need

The SECOND I have 3k and am all set with bills, tuition, maaser, sheitels, go on a vacation with my husband, etc. (Ie, in my dreams!)- the first think I'm doing is RUNNING to buy a cartier watch. So yes, if you can cover it and will love it, enjoy it!

Seems like you are considering either the Chanel Classic or the Gucci Marmont as those are the ones which have a clasp as the WOC and the Disco have the logo as part of the leather for most of the variations.
What leather are you considering if it's the Chanel - the Caviar or the smooth leather and which size?
The Chanel is more classic and more expensive than the Gucci. Caviar leather is incredibly durable - much more so than the regular leather but the "regular" leather Chanel feels sumptuous.

I can relate
I love designer items and usually go for pieces that are not covered in logos. Unless I absolutely love it and then I give myself a pass
There’s a couple bags I have that can be pretty recognizable to some people, and it’s a certain statement if you have one. I used to never wear them in my community because I knew the judgment I’d get if people realized what it was, and I was embarrassed. But I taught myself that just because someone else wouldn’t spend the money on something or get enjoyment out of it, doesn’t mean I can’t either. I don’t buy things to show off to other people, I buy them for me and the confidence in knowing that makes it ok for me to wear them without worrying about how others look at me when I do.
Most people also probably think it’s fake, and that’s fine by me for the same reason

Op I recently bought a designer bag and chose one without any logo. You can find gorgeous bags with no logo or a very discreet one.
You are awesome for being so sensitive to others!

I recently got an everyday Chanel bag and I’m in love.
I never owned anything designer and the purchase frightened me. But I’m so in love now. It’s so classy and I can be dressed in simple clothes but the bag elevates everything.
Go for it. It’s ok to have little things in life that give you joy. Life is hard enough. Enjoy it!

OP just another thing to consider-
If you are considering Chanel, especially a classic flap, which has astronomical prices at this point, do your research. This sounds like it will be your first designer bag and while Chanel bags are classic and timeless, the current bags quality really do not stand the test of time. Quality has really gone way way down while prices have gone way way up, and most of my friends and myself have had so many issues with our bags. Things that just shouldn’t even happen when spending that kind of money. So please do your research because for a first bag it can be extremely disappointing and devastating to have issues with that kind of investment, especially when it’s all you have.
If you are set on Chanel I would recommend looking to reputable resellers to perhaps invest in a vintage piece that will have incomparable quality and truly last forever
But if you are thinking about Chanel and getting it new, keep in mind that prices are rumored to be going up again in September

You won’t regret it. BH I bought myself my cartier watch 15 years ago when I turned 30. I was single and had plenty of disposable income and to this day it’s my favorite possession. I wear it daily and it’s still in perfect condition.
