Reading all these lakewood threads make me realize living in lakewood is not good for me. I’m a perfectionist, always feel like I’m in a big rat race, and would love to slow down.
That being said, I am an in towner. I will always be, I grew up my whole life in town. Are there any neighborhoods with lower costs of living and good quality of life that an in towner can feel comfortable in?
PLEASE don’t hijack the thread to tell me I’m not wanted in out of town communities. Oot for me just means not lakewood Brooklyn monsey or 5 towns. And I would be respectful of anywhere where I would go. But reality is I can’t move somewhere extremely out of town

So far people have mentioned Cleveland and Waterbury

Maybe Queens? But it’s probably too expensive to live there. There are yeshiva families who live in queens. I have no idea how they do it since the cost of living is high but I don’t think there is extreme social pressure/ clothing pressure etc like Lakewood has.

You know what sounds nice? Twin rivers- about 1/2 hour away from Lakewood. Very few frum families live there but there is a nice small frum community. Housing is much cheaper. Kids can travel to their Lakewood schools. There are some Lakewood families who wanted to get away from it all and moved to twin rivers.

Also Waterbury might be a good option.

Are you really going to move?? Does your husband want to move?

Passaic comes to mind as a reasonable compromise. Geographically it's close enough to everything in-town that you're used to, but it's a bit more suburban. As far as the people, there are definitely plenty of in-towners who've moved there, but it prides itself on being much less into labels and flash and much more into each person doing what works for them. Staten Island and Edison/Highland Park are other options worth looking into.

IMHO Twin Rivers is a satellite of Lakewood, and as more people will move in, standards will slowly creep us. If the kids are in lakewood school they'll also see all the gashmius around them.
I think Baltimore fits the bill more than Waterbury.

More gashmius than Lakewood. Major rat race in five towns especially north woodmere. The opposite of what op is looking for.

I agree with what you said about Passaic but housing there is a fortune and full tuition is about $12k. OP asked for lower costs of living.

OP, tuition in Lakewood is very low, wherever you move it will likely go up. And there’s almost no cheap housing to be found in the tri state except Waterbury.

Come to Israel! I also grew up in town, Lakewood. But I'm living here for a few years and can't think of moving back! People here are so much more real.. . The cost of living I feel is so much cheaper too.

I wish… but my kids are teens. Not an easy time for them to relocate…
Which neighborhood do you recommend?
Ramat beit shemesh? Givat ze’ev?

I believe in sticking with Americans makes life easier! Romema, Ramat Eshkol. Ramat Shlomo is really nice too there's a new area and people are really happy there.

Passaic - housing prices are not that much more than Lakewood prices although you do get more for your money in lkwd. The schools work with you with tuition.

If the kids are still in lkwd schools the gashmiyus will be the same. Maybe cheaper housing but that’s all you’ll accomplish

Baltimore came to mind as soon as I read the op

Highland Park/Edison Community is great! Schools are welcoming (no issues getting in) resteraunts, a bakery, and close enough that you can drive to lakewood to do shopping if you want. (Not necessarily needed tho)

Yeah I moved from there to Lakewood so I feel I can compare. Way more gashmius in five towns can’t even compare. Lakewood has way more low key people. Do you live here, doesn’t sound like it.
