after it has rose ready to go in the oven.

I should have peeled it away with a knife instead of gently pulling it off.

the dough didnt collapse but its not smooth on top and you can see large air bubbles.

is it ruined?

Go ahead and bake. The finished product may not be as light and fluffy as usual but it'll be safe to eat and just as tasty. Or you could knead some more yeast into it and let it rise again, but why bother?

You can also brush with an egg wash which will smooth down the surface as the liquid would dissolve the surface a bit AND you will have a glossy finish.
