Dh accidentally bought imported rib steak for a recipe instead of American. (This is after I told him it’s not helpful for him to shop for me because he may not understand what I want. And he begged to go shopping for me saying he will buy exactly what I say. Which is very sweet but here we are.)

Money is tight so I will not be buying more. How bad is it going to be? It’s supposed to be seated then cooked in a wine sauce…

I’ve literally never bought American meat. It’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools. I’ve made rib steak for my husband in the oven and it was totally fine

If I buy red meat, it is 100% of the time imported. I’m not spending more on anything else when you cant tell the difference. Some people claim
they can but I certainly cannot.

So OP, make whatever you’re planning on making. My guess is, you’ve eaten imported meat at someone’s house or at a restaurant many times and couldn’t tell the difference because you just didn’t know.

I buy imported meat all the time because for most things it tastes good and is way cheaper. Cool it as usual and ima ire it’ll be delicious.

Bake very tightly covered on very low like 225 or even lower for many hours depending on the size of the roast. For example 5 lbs I would roast for 12 hours in 225.

Very low and slow baking is the only way that I got imported meats deliciously soft.

Some meats it has zero effect if it's imported or not. Curious what meat it is. You'll be fine either wah. You may be surprised that you can't tell the difference.
For one.. It may shrink smaller than usual. But other than that I would still send my husband shopping.

Imported meat is generally tougher. You need to cook it longer/ use meat tenderizer/cook it in the instant pot to soften it up. And some people are ok with it being tougher, they have strong teeth Laugh .

I very rarely buy American meat myself, but I do know that there is a real difference.

Put tenderizer on the steak and let it sit for 15 minutes before cooking, it'll taste fine.

I personally use salt because I don't cook meat often enough for me to buy special spices, but I think it is sold in some stores.

(My father was the main cook in the house when I was growing up so I know all about meat, lol).

Also you can use a metal tenderizer that pounds the meat, it is sold in hardware stores (again, I'm lazy, I use a fork).

ETA: I tried searching for kosher meat tenderizer and McCormick popped up. I don't know if it is actually kosher or not, there are quite a few brands, maybe one of them is kosher.

Sprinkle with 3/4 tsp baking soda and let sit for no longer than 15 minutes (or else meat becomes spondy) and then rinse very well and pat dry.

Personally, I'd skip that and just make as usual.

It depends from where the meat is imported. Argentinian meat is good, Mexican meat is not.

I buy imported club steaks often and they taste delicious without tenderizer. I cover them with sauteed onions & mushrooms, then a sauce of barbecue sauce, wine, bit of sugar and garlic powder. I bake them in a preheated oven at 375 degrees for 90 minutes. Delish and always a hit.

Pretty much what my dh just said. Also Uruguay is better than Mexico, but Argentinean is best. He might be biased Wink

Her husband bought a steak, not a roast. Steak would be killed if you cooked it for hours. If you want to cook steak on a low in the oven, it should take about 30 minutes.

And yes, OP, imported steak would taste different and you need to take a better care of it, as it won’t be as marbled as an American one. Maybe consider a sous vide if you have one.

Next time send your husband to a store that mostly sell American meat. Unfortunately most stores sell imported only.

If she would say brisket, I’d say absolutely no worries. But this is a rib steak and you can actually see the difference.

I’ve never seen an Argentinian meat in stores in US. Mostly from Uruguay.
