Do you NEED to? No.
Is it customary in your community? What

Don’t need to. Always classy to do so. Less important what it is.

Agreed. Send something. Can you find out what is customary in their community if they live far away ?

Definitely send something.
It’s very hard to tell you what to spend. There are so many different types of people here from all over.
Try to find someone to speak to where your new machatonim live. Sometimes the shadchan can help. You can also ask the person you order from. I had to send a gift to a city I’m not familiar with and the woman I called was helpful and explained what amount would give me something very small and basic and how much was extravagant.

I don't know where your mechutonim live, but most places have someone who makes platters or other gifts. You can order from them and ask what is usual. Or if you know someone else who lives there, you can ask them to buy something or what is appropriate.
But yes it is a nice gesture to send something.
