Would you buy a gown that's too big and fix it?

I'm desperately searching for a gown for BIL'S wedding that's right after sukkos, and haven't found anything nice enough. I did find a beautiful dress on the RealReal but it's a few sizes too large. Does it make sense to buy it and take it in to fit me properly, or is it never going to fit right? And will it be a huge expensive job to do well? Please help.

Depends on many factors: dressmaker's skill, style of dress, type of fabric, how radical a reduction is needed. Taking in is easier than letting out so that's a plus. Many tailoring details make alteration harder. Slight size reduction is easier than reducing several sizes. Best ask a dressmaker; she can tell you if it's worth doing. For a really radical reduction, you're most likely better off getting a dress made from scratch.

Will the shoulders and chest be OK if it's a few sizes too large?
I would ask a good dressmaker before buying, but I doubt it could work

Consider instead buying a fairly simple dress that fits like a dream and having a dressmaker add a lace overlay, ruffles, beaded or sequinned appliques, a jeweled belt, jeweled buttons or other trim and details to make it suitable for a sister of the groom. (Not all of the above together, of course, perish the thought.)

2 sizes too big? Yes. Larger than that? No.

I regularly do it this way because my shoulders are 2 sizes bigger than the rest of me. Shoulders will be the hardest part to take on properly so if they’re way too big it may not work
