What phone for a trip to Europe?

Can someone explain to me how to use a phone in Europe?
I am going to Europe at the end of October for a week and need a phone to use while I am there.
I have a flip phone (no whats app) and it's not compatabile with most carriers outside of the US.

Should I just get a cheap smartphone for the week? And get a SIM card to use in Europe? Where can I get one in the US (I don't live in NY/NJ, so stores in Brooklyn won't be helpful). I don't have a lightweight camera, so a smartphone with a decent camera would probably be helpful.

Do you have Verizon? Can you get a travel pass?
I did that and it worked perfect

Nope, I don't have verizon. I use some MVNO that doesn't offer this.... any other ideas?
