Obviously it happens, but that is something I have never heard. I have only heard of schools lengthening the school day, never shortening it. Is that common? Also is it common for schools to randomly give a day off, as someone here said?

Nope. We get random notices that the "school calendar was wrong" or "just to clarify in case anyone had any questions but..." and it ALWAYS works in the schools favor so that they are open less. Day after YK having a late start was NOT on the calendar.
Or the entire school year just starting later than ever. It started late during covid to get kids used to being back in a building/structure after 6 months off with stated plans to return to normal hours. Then the next year the handbook said the normal start time but nope, it was actually back to covid start time. Even though our contract said the earlier time, it is just a given that we have the later time. Gate locked, can't drop off earlier.

Sorry but no. Shorter hours with tuition increases?

That’s so frustrating! Do the parents complain to the school when they change it like that? Or do complaints just fall on deaf ears? BH that’s not something I have ever had to deal with.

My dd school slipped it in the student handbook given 2 weeks before school started that school on Friday will be one hour shorter. Do you really think they care about what the parents want?

When people look into a school, they are looking into whether the school fits their hashkafa and general way of life. They look to see if their children will be educated in the way they want them to be. They look to see if the teachers will be mechanech their children the way they want them to.
In playgroups and daycares, they look to see if their children will be well taken care of. I don’t know anyone who looks into schools that way.

Yes. School age kids need basically no hands on care (as opposed to daycare) but it’s assumed that the kids will be safe and supervised at whatever school they enroll in. I imagine if Bais Fruma Sara had a reputation that their girls were wild and wandered home during the day, parents wouldn’t send. Teachers, assistants etc. have responsibilities outside of pure education.

But DO the parents speak up? I certainly would if my kids schools did that.

I wouldn’t call it luck - but yes it’s really helpful.

Yes, they do, but most people are not looking at schools as daycare.

Sure we call to complain but nothing happens. They can't add the hour back after they took it away the teachers would go crazy. And they know ultimately nothing will happen, we need to send our kids to school...the schools have the upper hand.

Most people get it that when school is open someone else is taking responsibility for their child. Call it supervision not care if that helps.

Yes, but that’s not the purpose of school. It’s not on most people’s list of things they are looking for when they are sending children to school. Just like I don’t call it childcare when I send my child to a friend. Of course someone is supervising, but that’s not the purpose of my sending.

So we’re arguing terminology. The purpose of school is education. Nobody is sending kids to school so that they can work - however given that many parents aren’t available during the day to care for their children…. School by default serves an additional need for them. Most people aren’t hiring a nanny when all kids are in school.

No, but many people do have back ups. They/their spouse take off. Parents/siblings/ other relatives. Friends and neighbors. Drop off baby sitters. Most people are t sending their kids to school when they are sick. Yes, by default their kids are being watched/supervised when they are in school, but that’s not the purpose of school in the frum world.

There is no one to complain to.
They don't care.
"They have their reasons". Yeah- the teachers and staff want a later start time! They got used to it and liked it. Wish my job just let me be 15 minutes late every day for the same pay....
