We are planning a trip from nyc to niagara. Does anyone have any ideas where we can stop on the way-interesting or fun places?
Also in niagara, what are must see or must do attractions?
After that we will be going to toronto, what is there to do there?

Any ideas would be appreciated, as I am trying to plan our itinerary.

TIA

there isn't an awful lot to do on the way, though you can look into things around binghamton or syracuse. It's been years since I've stopped anywhere but reststops and motels along the way.
In Niagara- What kind of stuff do you like?
on the American side there's a tour that takes you down on the rocks alongside the Bridal Veil falls (ie. The American falls.) I can't remember it's name right now.
There's Maid of the Mist- have to do that if you want the kids to remember it. Both the American and Canadian sides have it, though I'd do the Canadian. It's a boat ride as close to the falls as possible.
All the rest of the stuff is on the Canadian side
Journey behind the Falls- exactly what it sounds like- behind the Horseshoe falls
there's Clifton Street with all the museums and attarctions- Ripley's Believe it or Not, Mdm. Toussade's Wax Museum, and a host of other stuff. There's a 4D ride over the falls, forgot what it's called. It's an Imax film.

There's plenty to do...and it can get costly...

There's also a Kosher restaurant and I'm not sure if the Pizza store is still running. The restaurant details can be found at chabadniagara.com

Anything else?

(I should charge Very Happy )

Toronto:
CN Tower- it's really pricey though
Ontario Science Centre- unique
Royal Ontario Museum
Ontario Place/ The EX- Exhibition Place
the Batta Shoe Museum Very Happy

PM me if you want more details.

We were in Niagara Falls last week, and visited pretty much all the attractions that the above poster listed.

There's also a beautiful botanical garden near the Buutterfly Conservatory, and nice parks all around the area.

there are really 2 highways you can take to get to Niagra.
One of the ways is a bit longer (I think less then 1 hour) but there is some nice things to do on the way so it is worth it.

Letchworth State Park - Beautifal waterfalls and hiking along the waterfalls
Watkins Glen State Park - Its a gourge with water that you hike through, there is also a park and picnic area.
Corning Museum of Glass

When we went we took the longer way home and stopped to do these things on the way.

When we were there, you could get a combination ticket so you could do maid of the mist, behind the falls, all of them. It also included the butterfly conservatory-which was definitely worth doing. There's a bus that will take you there that is included in the fee.

We also really liked Niagara on the Lake which is a small town on the Canadian side. There are lots of plays there if you are into theater, and it was just beautiful to walk through the town there.

We camped out near Letchworth once. It is a really pretty place.

there is a bus tour that operates in Niagara that takes you to most of the cool places, you get on and off, etc, the bus waits for you, and you don't have to worry about traffic or parking. while you're on the bus you can scope out places you want to go back to

If you have the time (and money) there is a fun hotel on the Canadian side called Great Wolf Lodge with a good indoor water park. Your kids will love it. But the prices during the summer are high.

We loved marine land, which is on the canadian side (not cheap either). It is a combination amusement park with lots of rides and an aquarium-marine life experience center -- I have some great pictures of my kids feeding and petting beluga whales!

For the time being, you need a birth certificate + photo ID. Under 18, no need for photo ID. They're changing the law as of June 09- even by land or sea you'll need a passport.

Going through Corning is a bit longer. It means taking the 17/86 and the speed limit often goes down to 55. So aside from the mileage, you've got the speed factor which lengthens it. It's a beautiful drive though.

Welland Canal In Ontario
Niagara Falls, Ontario
1-905-688-5601/1-800-305-5134
The first impression of a modern lake-faring freighter is of its
overwhelming size. It doesn't seem possible that something of such immense
proportions could even be built, much less be able to dock, load, and sail
the lakes. Yet dozens of lakers and "salties" (sea going ships) ply up and
down the Welland Canal every day, casting enormous shadows as they cruise
incongruously past lush orchards and vineyards.
Longer than two football fields and weighing more than 30,000 tonnes, how is
it possible to lift these behemoths up and over the cliff face of the
Niagara Escarpment? Not only is this done on a routine basis, but the
technology is so simple that ships have been routinely hoisted up and down
the escarpment for over 150 years. Engineers discovered the trick
long ago - let gravity and water do the work. The locks are filled and
emptied by water flowing downhill from Lake Erie toward Lake Ontario. Many
fascinating hours can be spent watching how the gates are opened and shut to
control the water flow, allowing ponderous monsters from all corners of the
world to sail into the middle of the North American continent. Originally
constructed in 1829 to link Lake Erie with Lake Ontario and offer ships a
safe detour around Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal has a long and colourful
history.
You can explore this great wonder with any number of tours, either by car,
by bicycle, or on foot.
