Short or mid length winter coat

Replacing my winter coat of many years which was short, came to my hips. It was comfortable to sit in the car like that but at the bus stop with my kids I was cold.
I don’t like the look of longer costs with maxi skirts but truthfully I don’t often wear maxi skirts in the winter.
Which way should I go?
Trying to look put together and it’s not a natural strength of mine

Longer is def more put together looking and warmer but I get what you mean about the maxis
