I don't think you can go wrong with either set up of the photos. It's up to you.
It's also hard for people to give you advice if they don't know what your space or your photos look like. For example, is there a couch under the photos, a window on the opposite wall, bookshelves on either side, what type of lighting is in the room etc. All these factors might change someone's opinion of what looks best.
Best for you to bring a friend over to see the photos and space to get more opinions

Smaller pics 4 boys, 4 girls 16x20
Hanging over couch, side wall is windows, other side closets

I have a 30x40 (approx) acrylic picture from dds wedding. SIL got it for me for less than $50. He thinks it was around $30, but not sure. I just asked him where he bought it and he said he got it thru a groupon deal on black friday. doesn't remember the company name.
There should still be cyber monday sales now. Hatzlacha.
